Position Summary

Supports the Claims organization's business goals through assessment of data and analytics needs and the subsequent research, design and implementation of effective solutions. Provides comprehensive, actionable business intelligence to business leaders, including financial analysis, to inform decision-making as well as measure outcomes of key business initiatives. Plans and manages data and analytics projects of moderate to high complexity and impact to the business. Recommends new or updated business strategies and tactics, based on data-driven insight.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Sources or compiles production data for analysis to improve claims operations and initiatives. Supports the planning, development, coordination, communication, implementation and reporting of all Claims company, state and branches with associated metrics, measurements and targets.
  • Evaluates requests for claims data and management reports. For complex applications, applies business process analysis and other tools to gather, coordinate and analyze business requirements for information requests, including data and report requests. Makes recommendations for improvements to reports as appropriate.
  • Designs, tests and modifies complex Business Intelligence and Operational reports. Applies knowledge of programming languages and software tools to prepare ad hoc and re-occurring reports. Develops moderate to complex business intelligence tools, databases, dashboards, reports, systems or methods. Leads claims responses/projects to inquiries regarding market conduct exams, reconciliations for insurance departments and government entities (i.e. data calls, etc.).
  • Works with internal clients to determine claims data needs. Measures the effectiveness of claims strategies in driving field performance and staffing improvement. Recommends, develops and manages timely and cost effective databases and programs.
  • Supports claims planning efforts in leading the solution design, production and analysis of reports, metrics, scorecards and dashboards. Interprets complex data in order to provide supervisors and managers with claims information.
  • Acquires data and composes reports that include analyses for correlation, trending and forecasting. Creates executive summaries. Drives operational effectiveness through technology, process improvement and information management.
  • Assists with analyzing the financial implications of business decisions and identifies approaches to resolve business problem.
  • Maintains knowledge of current business activities/processes. Provides subject matter expertise in claims systems and business processes when required or for definition of requirements and solution design for information requests throughout the organization. Assists IT in translation of business requirements into technical requirements.
  • Participates in division projects which produce measurable results for the claims organization. Researches and recommends best practices as appropriate to enhance capabilities and create efficiencies.
  • Works collaboratively with IT to design universes and/or a data warehouse that meet the needs of the business and creates quality and consistency of reporting across multiple areas.
  • Creates data models and develops data warehouse programs to ensure actuarial needs are met and better understands the demographics and potential opportunities within the ERIE footprint. Analyzes metrics and supports audit of source data.
  • Mentors/guides with troubleshooting of testing and validation of interface files.
  • Mentors, guides and trains personnel to use the Business Intelligence reporting and analysis tools effectively.
  • Consistently recognizes data issues and unexpected results, researches data anomalies and initiates resolution to either data issues or programming logic.
  • Completes special projects as required.
  • Maintains current knowledge of data analysis tools and trends. Helps to identify gaps in current services, proposes solutions and implements as appropriate.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Required Education Equivalents Bachelor's degree (preferably in mathematics, marketing, finance, business, computer science) and four years' experience with reporting, measuring and data analysis; or Associate degree (preferably in mathematics, marketing, finance, business, computer science) and six years' experience in reporting, measuring and data analysis; or High School diploma or GED and eight years' experience in reporting, measuring and data analysis, required. Advanced knowledge of creating and working with database applications, writing queries and advanced spreadsheet software features, such as pivot tables and macros required. Advanced knowledge of dataset, programming, querying and report design required. Advanced knowledge of Business Objects or similar business intelligence tool required. Advanced knowledge of business intelligence, data warehouse and data management concepts required. Completion of a professional insurance designation preferred. Willingness to enroll in insurance education courses, industry or technology related education and/or other advanced education required. Working knowledge of IT policies and practices required. Property/Casualty insurance background preferred. Knowledge of claims handling and processes, and insurance accounting required. Occasional overnight travel will be required.
