Position Summary

Plans and manages data and analytics projects of high complexity and confidentiality.  Provides leadership regarding data related accounting and reporting requirements, including transfer of data between systems and the general ledger and data/analytic applications used in accounting and reporting.  Leads the team in data and related accounting functions to organize, analyze, track and report complex financial activities.  Represents and advocates for the division in data matters impacting accounting, reporting, and controls.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages overall operations of designated area of authority. Interviews, hires, trains, and directs personnel. Prepares and conducts performance assessments, coordinates discipline, and oversees Employee development as required.
  • Leads and manages data related projects including, planning, coordinating resources, developing accounting and reporting requirements, testing, and consulting on internal controls in accordance with Sarbanes-Oxley and Model Audit Rule regulations, for authoritative guidance changes, new product offerings, technology implementations, and other initiatives.  Participates in discussion and decision-making processes for data related business matters to ensure that accounting, reporting, and associated internal controls are considered in all key decisions and enterprise projects.
  • Represents the division on data domain, governance, and interactions sub-councils by socializing and advocating for accounting, reporting, and control needs. Builds and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external partners in the data community.
  • Maintains current knowledge of programming languages, data analysis tools, and trends. Identifies gaps in current services, proposes solutions and implements changes as appropriate. Responsible for continuous improvement and development of standard data practices supporting financial reporting. 
  • Leads the financial statement close and/or internal controls testing processes for as applicable to data team responsibilities in support of internal and external financial statements and other key reports to senior leadership and the Board.
  • Performs technical reviews on journal entries, reports and schedules prepared by direct reports for completeness and accuracy using a strong knowledge of property and casualty operations and applicable GAAP or Statutory accounting principles (SAP).
  • Ensures that data processes supporting accounting and reporting are developed utilizing consistent, state-of-the-art techniques, tools, and technologies and in the most efficient and effective manner possible.
  • Oversees in-depth research and analysis related to assigned projects and issues.  Provides research recommendations and interprets relevant data.
  • Completes special projects as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, information systems or business-related field, required. Seven years of experience in accounting, financial reporting, information systems, data analysis, or financial analysis, required, or;
  • Associate degree in finance, accounting, information systems or business-related field, required and nine years of experience in accounting, financial reporting, information systems, data analysis, or financial analysis, required, or;
  • High school diploma or GED with eleven years of experience in accounting, financial reporting, information systems, data analysis, or financial analysis, required.
  • Experience with dataset, programming, querying, and reporting design required. Advanced knowledge of SAS (or comparable programming language) required. An understanding of analysis and research required.  Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software required.
  • Insurance industry experience preferred. Working knowledge of SAP and NAIC reporting preferred. People management experience preferred. Project management experience preferred.
  • The position requires the incumbent to work weekends and restrict vacation during peak periods.
