Position Summary
Performs life underwriting functions within an increased designated level of authority to evaluate and select risks the company will insure. Approval authority up to $3 million. Ensures that Agents understand and adhere to company underwriting philosophy and service expectations of Policyholders. Actively supports and promotes corporate objectives and strategic growth plans. Develops Industry knowledge through the pursuit of insurance coursework and evolving life underwriting knowledge.
- This position is based in person out of our Corporate Office in Erie, PA.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluates more complex life insurance applications. Collects, reviews, and analyzes an applicant's relevant history and records. Obtains additional information about an applicant as needed to determine eligibility to accept or deny each request for coverage at an established rate class.
- Corresponds, develops, and maintains working relationships with Agents, ERIE sales force and other departments through meetings, phone contact and email. Attends meetings as required to learn to establish rapport with agents and develop knowledge of ERIE’s territories.
- Assists with departmental secondary tasks such as reinstatements and reissues, post issue audits, lifeworks and risk assessments as needed.
- Provides mentorship and/or training to other life underwriters as needed. Reviews referrals for second signature from other underwriters as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum education and experience requirements
- Bachelor's degree and five years related experience required; or
- Associates degree and seven years related experience required; or
- High school diploma, or GED, and nine years related experience required; or
- High school diploma, or GED, successful completion of FLMI or FALU designation, and five years related experience required.
Additional Experience
- Working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and email software required.
- Occasional travel required.
- Underwriting experience at the company or agency level with an in-depth knowledge of all related business lines preferred.
- Working knowledge of underwriting guidelines and techniques, demonstrated through proven strong underwriting performance preferred.
Designations and/or Licenses
- Pursuit of industry designations such as ALMI, FLMI, FALU or CLU, required.
- Successful completion of the AALU or FLMI designation preferred.
