Multiple positions available.  Erie Insurance is seeking Underwriter II and Senior Underwriters with experience in Personal Lines, Commercial Lines and/or Middle Market.  



Position Summary

Manages and services a more complex assigned book of business requiring specialized knowledge in partnership with the agencies to align strategy for effective growth and profitability through using appropriate resources and systems, performs portfolio underwriting/reunderwriting functions within designated level of authority to evaluate and select risks the company will insure. Evaluates new and current business to verify initial and continued acceptability and adequate rates. Ensures that Agents understand and adhere to company underwriting philosophy and service expectations of Policyholders. Actively supports and promotes corporate objectives and strategic growth plans. Viewed as senior resource within the division. Partners with the agencies to align strategy for effective growth and profitability of the book of business. Collaborates with the field management and sales vice presidents to build and train agency property and casualty acumen. Develops Industry knowledge through the pursuit of insurance coursework and evolving product knowledge. Will perform with mono-line or multi-line expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: Commercial, Personal, Life or Bond.

Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluates more complex underwriting applications and policy change transaction requests that are outside ERIE’s guidelines or best practices for both property and casualty. Reviews related reports and other appropriate sources to determine acceptability of risk. Reviews records and questionnaires to verify continued acceptability and rate adequacy. Reviews risks and reports to determine appropriate action, including risk mitigation strategies, coverage modifications or termination. Prepares and evaluates change requests and renewal contracts.

Analyzes account level and portfolio level experience, claim and risk reports, rate adequacy and acceptability of occupancy and/or operation in order to determine Agent underwriting and re-underwriting strategies. Advises leadership and Agent of underwriting action to retain, modify, or terminate risks where applicable.

Provides consultative advice to Agents regarding risk selection and frontline underwriting. Initiates, develops and maintains working relationships with Agents, ERIE sales force and other departments through meetings, phone contact and email.

Develops strategy to improve portfolio growth and profitability. Leads the collaboration with Agent and Field Sales to create strategies to improve Agent profitability and participates in how to improve Agent growth.

Acts as a resource to Agents and their staff, answering questions and discussing risks. Communicates with branch Employees regarding Agent issues or concerns.

Travels to field offices to participate in presentations and attends meetings as required in order to establish rapport with Agents and develop knowledge of assigned territories/ region(s).

Participates in the evaluation of Agents as directed. Maintains / documents Agent files for periodic review with management and/or branch staff. Advises underwriting consultant or management of issues or concerns.

Advises management and Agents regarding termination of unacceptable risks and accounts requiring facultative reinsurance cessions.

Participates in insurance-related education and develops knowledge of current industry trends. Maintains an understanding of existing laws and regulations, emerging technologies, and competitor actions that can impact our customers, our product offering, or our pricing.

Trains and mentors less experienced underwriters.

Minimum education and experience requirements:
Bachelor's degree and five years of insurance experience or insurance product experience at the company oragency level with an in-depth knowledge of all related business lines required; or
Associates degree and seven years related experience (see above) required; or
High school diploma, or GED, and nine years related experience (see above) required; or
High school diploma, or GED, and successful completion of CPCU, CIC or PLCS designation and five yearsrelated experience (see above) required.
Working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, and email software required.
Occasional travel required.
Working knowledge of underwriting guidelines and techniques, demonstrated through proven strongunderwriting performance preferred.
Successful completion of the General Insurance program (INS 21, 22, 23) strongly preferred.
Successful completion of two parts of the following programs: CPCU, CIC, PLCS, AAI, AFSB, API, AIC, AU orARM strongly preferred.
