Position Summary

Develops and directs the implementation of corporate tax policies, practices and plans in order to meet corporate goals as established by executive management and in compliance with federal, state and local tax regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manages overall operations of designated area of authority. Interviews, hires, trains and directs personnel. Prepares and conducts performance assessments, coordinates discipline and oversees Employee development as required.
  • Performs an ongoing review and assesses the impact of the current tax posture for all ERIE companies and reports the results on a regular basis as directed by management.
  • Makes recommendations regarding the handling of specific tax matters that result from ongoing reviews or as directed by management.
  • Maintains and applies a current knowledge of GAAP and SAP accounting statutes and regulations related to federal income taxes applicable to all ERIE companies.
  • Review and provides final approval of quarterly disclosures for federal income taxes and monthly federal income tax provision work papers according to both SAP and GAAP requirements, for all ERIE entities.
  • Maintains a strong knowledge of all Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and Model Audit Rule (MAR) regulations to ensure proper filing of SEC and state documents and compliance with all related requirements and standards prior to release. Establishes and approves processes to monitor and maintain SOX and MAR compliance documentation related to federal income tax processes.
  • Approves the monthly and quarterly reconciliations of all tax accounts and records to ensure that financial data has been recorded according to internal and external requirements.
  • Develops and directs planning initiatives and strategies to minimize corporate taxes. Directs the implementation of recommendations as approved by executive management.
  • Performs in-depth research of tax laws and recommends courses of action regarding specific tax issues as directed by management.
  • Prepares all federal and state income and franchise tax returns, extensions and estimated payments, local tangible and intangible property tax returns and sales and use tax returns.
  • Administers federal, state and local tax audits.
  • Reviews, assesses and makes recommendations with regard to current tax accounting policies, procedures and practices. Assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of related policies, procedures and practices.
  • Develops and maintains a comprehensive tax/financial planning model for each ERIE company.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in accounting, or related field required. CPA designation or MBA preferred. Eight years experience with a Big 4 accounting firm and/or a major property/casualty or life insurance company including a current, in-depth knowledge of the federal income tax code, regulations and rulings as they pertains to property/casualty and life insurance companies required. Current in-depth knowledge of SAP and GAAP rules and regulations including disclosure requirements required. Proficiency in the use of PC-based financial planning software required.
