Position Summary

Manages staff responsible for commercial claims activities. Develops and evaluates claims handling and litigation procedures. Actively supports and promotes corporate objectives and strategic plans including projects, presentations, and regional/branch collaborations.

 

  • The successful candidate will work from home and live in ERIE'S Footprint.
  • Minimal travel will be necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages overall operations of designated area of authority. Interviews, hires, trains and directs personnel. Prepares and conducts performance assessments, coordinates discipline, and oversees Employee development as required.
  • Makes recommendations to and participates in developing and evaluating claims procedures.
  • Reviews claims correspondence and maintain working knowledge of files and reserves as necessary. Counsels claims personnel on further activity.
  • Conducts research to resolve coverage or unusual questions within designated authority.
  • Assists in evaluating and handling suits.
  • Responds to complaints and inquiries. 
  • Develops metrics and reports to monitor the quality of  claims handling, procedures and expenses.  Deliver findings, reports, and recommendations.
  • Act as a liaison to other ERIE divisions on claims-related matters.

Qualifications

Minimum Educational and Experience Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree and eight years of claim handling or related experience required; or
  • Associate degree and ten years of claim handling or related experience required; or
  • High school diploma or GED and twelve years claims handling or related experience required.


Additional Experience 

  • Strong knowledge of commercial claims law, court structure, legal procedures, judicial proceedings and litigation claim handling best practices required.
  • Strong knowledge of tort/contract law and insurance coverage required. 
  • Overnight travel occasionally required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.


Designations and/or Licenses 

  • Completion of Associate in Claims (AIC), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Senior Claim's Law Associate (SCLA), or Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designations preferred. 
  • Valid driver's license required.
